Well...it took me a week and a half..but I finished reading
Breath....and it was sooooooooooooo goood....I hated to finish the
book....it felt like leaving a family of sorts....

I believe I understood the ending....I think it meant that is what
Brianna saw when she went through the papers to see if Jamie and Claire
were still alive....and she saw the paper where she thought they were
killed in the fire..I am not sure but I hope that history didn't repeat
itself...but it looks to me that the notice was going to be put in but
they lost interest since it was outdated. What do you think?

Anyway...I enjoyed reading this book....and now that I know there will
be at least one more..can't wait for the next one to come out...of
course maybe 4 to 5 years from now....

So what is everyone else's thoughts on the book....

I think the ending indicated that the printer substituted the date of
January for December because he didn't have the right type font for the
December plate. So he figured that as it was an old notice, no one would
really care much. Little did they know.............

The fire was really meant to happen in January, that's why Jamie et all were
lulled into a false sense of security when the fire didn't happen when they
thought it would happen.

And the 2 bodies found in the house were the bad dudes........... (GG)!

Yes, the date was altered, because the printers didn't have the right
equipment to print the correct date. And the fact that they thought the
whole family died was the bad dudes who burned in the fire. Bree and her
family have gone through the stones. Now am I understanding it correctly is
Jamie and Claire going back to Scotland?

From some of the excerpts that Diana had on her website a long time ago,
yes, they go back to Scotland. At some point, Claire believes that Jamie is
dead so she agrees to marry Lord John as a marriage of convenience/
protection for her. Well, of course, Jamie isn't dead and he returns only
to then be arrested, along with Claire, for bigamy and adultery I think.
Willie (Jamie's son who is now Claire's stepson by her marriage to Lord
John) comes to free her and she says she's not going without Jamie, I
believe a fire breaks out and they escape and at this point, Claire insists
that Jamie tell Willie who he really is.

I wish that Diana still had that excerpt available because I would have
liked to have printed it out but now it's gone. If anyone else read it
please feel free to correct anything I may have remembered incorrectly.
Also, if anyone has it and can email it to me, I'd be very appreciative!

Thanks,
Alida

My reading on that, is that JAMIE goes back to Scotland, while Claire stays
in Carolina, where she marries Lord John for protection, as they both
believe that Jamie is dead.

Jamie takes Claire everywhere with him, even into battle. I highly doubt
that she would just sit home in Carolina (allowing him to be on a ship
without her, especially considering his seasickness) and just wait for him
to write or return home. Claire would be right at his side. I don't think
she would ever be willingly parted from him again after their long
separation. If I recall correctly, Claire was living with Lord John at his
mother's house in London in the excerpt.

Anyone else recall exactly what was going on in that excerpt?

One of the excerpts was a letter, from Jamie to Claire - so, obviously,
they were not together at that time.
My understanding was that he wrote it in the UK, and she was reading it in
Carolina, where she was in some danger because of her political views.

I checked the WayBack machine for the old excerpts - here's the letter from
Jamie to Claire -

<http://web.archive.org/web/20040628055614/www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/excerpts/jamieletter.html>

And here is the one in which John Grey proposes -
<http://web.archive.org/web/20041026013925/www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/excerpts/proposal.html>

To sum up - Jamie has been reported lost at sea, on his way back from
Britain to the Colonies.
John Grey and Claire are still in the Colonies, it's been two months since
the report of Jamie's death, and John Grey offers to marry Mistress Fraser.

Thanks for the links. Of course, the one where Jamie meets Willie doesn't
work but the others do.

It's been a long time since I read them and, as I said, I couldn't quite
remember the details. Thanks for correcting me although it seems strange
that Claire would have let Jamie go without her. I guess we'll have to wait
and see how Diana explains it.

I was able to find a link that worked for "Jamie meets Willie". I copied
and saved all the excerpts so I can go back and read them when I'm needing a
DG Outlander fix!
