Some odd, random thoughts about Jamie
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I've lurked here and I see that the group has been
quiet lately. I've been re-reading the series again lately over the past
few weeks - am about 2/3 done Dragonfly. In the past 6 weeks, I've hooked 3
new people on the wee buiks!

During this re-read, something about Jamie has been niggling at me and
tonite I realized what it is. Now what I'm about to say may possibly be
considered blasphemy as it may not seem very complimentary about Jamie - so
this is just a warning to you all! On the other hand, I might be
pmsing...... (GG) I've noticed that Jamie has acted quite selfishly toward
Claire at times. I felt that Jamie went overboard when he felt that he
needed to "beat" Claire in Outlander. Granted yes, by her leaving and
trying to get to the stones, then being captured by the redcoats, she did
put the rest of the group in danger, but I felt that Jamie was abit
pigheaded in his stubborness in thinking he needed to beat her to prove a
point. Then in Dragonfly, after they were reunited after Claire lost Faith,
Jamie was being pigheaded and selfish again when he realized that Claire had
been with King Louis, in order to get him out of jail. He said that he
wouldn't beat her, instead used her very hard. Again, for the sake of his
own honor. It just seems to me that despite whatever Claire said to him, he
somehow managed to turn things around so that it was HIS honor that had been
damaged. And again in ABOSAA, after Claire's kidnapping and rape, Jamie
insisted that they make love to ensure that any possible child resulting
from the rape etc, would just as easily be Jamie's child as the well as the
rapist. Did Jamie not realize that if Claire was to become pregnant, he
would have been too late. Again, all about his own honor......... I'm sure
there are other similar instances, however they don't come to mind at the
moment. There could be one coming up soon, as I'm at the point in Dragonfly
when Claire has been tending to the sick Alex and being repaid from Black
Jack, with spying that he's done against the English. I can't remember what
Jamie's reaction will be once he finds out what she's done (after all, they
did swear honesty to each other in their marriage), but I don't imagine it
will be pretty......

I have no doubts this thread will start some discussion, so I'm looking
forward to your replies! Just no flame throwing please!!! These are just
my own opinions! (GG)

Ok, off my soap box and going back into lurk mode.......

Hi:

While I take your point on Jamie's honour, I find it hard to see it
the way you do. Please don't take me wrong, while this behavour was
totaly a surprise to Claire I think it was meant more as a tool to
show the difference in their existances. Jamie is supposed to be a
big fierce Highlander who runs through the country side stealing cows
and causing mayhem for the English red coats. He thinks nothing of
the punishment as that was how he was raised. That was how you dealt
with disobedience. wife's were possesions and nothing more. The
fact that Jamie loves Claire stops him from doing more. It's part of
his charm. Besides he quickly learns how much or little Clarie will
tolerate. After the strap scean in Outlander Claire askes for it with
the nettles. Jamie chooses other methods to deal with her
unfaithfulness the fact that it was with the King doesn't enter into
it. Their relationship only gets stronger for it in the long run.
Besides I would love Jamine to use me hard. LOL
