there, that should be enough...

So, what did you think about Stephen Bonnet's part in this? I'm a little
surprised that Brianna didn't take the chance to finish him off after Rogern
and Jamie caught him on Ockracoke. And I talso thought the method of
execution rather brutal, despite his crimes. He seemed to have his own, if
somewhat warped, code of honor. I'm glad he's finally gone, but by the same
token, with Roger and Brianna back in their own time, he wouldn't have been
a threat to them anymore anyway.

The whole Stephen Bonnet part confused the heck out of me. I guess I
just wasn't interested in his arc anymore....does that make sense??

Now I did enjoy learning more about Ian's time with the
Mohawk....although it was so sad. OMG and that whole Malva thing???
TWISTED!!!

I was hugely relieved to know that SB was gone for good and I'm glad it
was Brianna that did it. I guess he could have been a threat to Jemmy
if it turned out he couldn't go back. This way they know he's gone and
won't be hurting anybody else.

I'm really happy with the way DG fleshed out Brianna and Roger in this
book. They seemed much more 'real' and likable as characters. A lot of
questions were answered for me and I have to say this book is certainly
right up there with Outlander.

I, too am relieved to see the end of Stephen Bonnett. I think Brianna
saw how he was suffering at the very slow method of execution he was
going through and she remembered his nightmare that he told her he'd
had many times before and offered him mercy in giving him a quick
death. As much as he might have deserved a horrible death, I'm glad
Brianna was able to offer him mercy in this.

I, also was happy with the way Diana fleshed out Brianna and Roger and
also the glimpses of what Jemmy's character might be. I always liked
Brianna and Roger, but it was nice to see Brianna mature more and I
liked the idea of Roger becoming a minister and getting back some of
his singing. I thought it was pretty funny when Jemmy said, "Hello, my
name is Johnny Cash," and was singing "Folsom Prison Blues" to himself.
What a hoot!

Diana sure knows how to make a complex character, even though he is a
scumbag, you still see a side of him that is decent and it makes him so much
more real. I am glad she (Brianna) finished him off, I think she needed to.
Put her own demons to rest where he's concerned.
There were parts of this book that I found myself reading over and over...
just because I wanted to really soak in what was going on. There was alot of
humor, the conversations are so wonderful, and I feel more than a little sad
that I finished it this afternoon. I miss my friends!
Great way to end it, with Bree and Roger and the kids at Lallybroch. And the
box with Jemmy's name on the lid!!!!!!!

Hi, all! New here... just finished last night, and I'm always so sad
when the book's done. It was great, and I find the relationship with
C&J to be so lovely and rather inspiring.
From another thread, it was calculated that Claire's age was ~61 in
ABoSaA. If so, though, why would she be worrying about possibly being
pregnant after her kidnapping ordeal? Seems to me, that would be pretty
impossible.

That business with Lizzie and the twins was so, so odd. As was all that
with poor Malva. No wonder Ian seems to be staying single!

While 61 is on the high end of the age range for menopause (average is 51 plus or minus 7 or 8 years), it's possible that Claire was still experiencing it and had not completely stopped menstruating. Ever heard of "change of life" babies? It's actually not uncommon for women who are going through menopause to think that they can't get pregnant but it is entirely possible and even harder to know when you're going to ovulate because your cycles are so sporadic at that point. Now, in this case, Claire had a history of not being able to conceive very easily so it seemed unlikely that she would have gotten pregnant by the kidnappers.

P.S. Here's a quote I found by Marie Stopes who wrote a sex ed manual back in 1918.

"The late forties would perhaps be described as the average. The early fifties is the age for the fortunate woman; the late fifties and sixties for the rather exceptional woman if her vitality is very strong and she is of the late maturing type."

We can certainly describe Claire as exceptional, strong and vital.

Carrie Ann,

I calculated Claire and Jamie's ages in an earlier thread. I used their
dates of birth from the Outlandish Companion. Here's a copy of my previous
post.

I had to look this up in the Outlandish Companion but here are Jamie and
Claire's exact dates of birth:

Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser October 20, 1918 2:09
pm London
James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser May 1, 1721 6:30 pm (approx)
near Inverness

Outlander starts out in 1946 and Claire was 28. When she goes through
stones, it's then 1743 (so her adjusted date of birth would be:
1743-28=1715) and Jamie is 22. There's a six year age difference with
Claire being the older of the two of course. So, in ABOSAA, it ends in 1776
where Claire is 61 and Jamie is 55.

Of course that's if I've figured it out correctly. LOL! Time travel makes
things interesting that's for sure!

I knew that Claire was definitely "middle aged", but 61 yrs seems so old! I
would have personally guessed her to be about 10 years younger - at 51yrs.
And doesn't the story refer to her hair as only being litely sprinkled with
gray? I know there are many women who still retain their natural hair color
at that age (it's in my own family!), but it just feels right to me that her
age is more early 50's. 61 just seems soooo........ old!!!

If you think 61 is old, I'm not even going to mention mine.

But I'm not dead yet.
